H.O.P.E. is a thriving
organic garden on Scotland's east coast. It is an environmentally
friendly project, providing horticultural training and work experience.
All the trainees are people with learning disabilities who live in the
Angus area. The project also offers the local community an
ever-increasing range of organically grown vegetables, fruit and garden
plants.
H.O.P.E. operates in the
grounds of Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, a coastal town between
Dundee and Aberdeen. Under the visionary leadership of garden
supervisors, trainees and volunteers have transformed an ordinary field
into a mini-Eden. Rows of vegetables, polytunnels bursting with life,
fruit cages and greenhouses, a wildlife pond and a colourful memorial
garden combine to form a diverse and ecologically balanced environment.
H.O.P.E. has a positive
and growing profile in the local community, offering a home delivery
vegetable box scheme, sales direct from the garden 5 afternoons per
week, open days and hands-on activities. The produce is certified as
organic by the Soil Association. H.O.P.E. works closely with Angus
Council Social Work and with Angus College.
